Summit Sanctuary of Pirgos
At the top of Pirgos Mountain, on a rocky height, there is a solitary tree above which there are marks of a sanctuary of the Minoan era. It was founded after 2000 BC and was discovered in 1962 by the archaeologist Spiros Aleksiou. The potter idols and worshiping implements that have been found at this point have been transported to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. Instructions of approach: 700 metres after Tylisos we meet a crossroad for Moni. Right across there is a dirt-road which after 4 km reaches a flat with sight of the Strouboula Plateau, the small church of Agios Georgios and the other of the Holy Cross on the top of the opposite mountain. From there starts a path which leads to the Summit Sanctuary after a 20 minute walk. Summit Sanctuary of Pirgos
