Summit sanctuary in Filiorimo
At the foot of Filiorimo hill above Gonies dominates the windmill. Following the dirt-road at the top of the hill is found the small church of Prophet Helias. When they dug in order to found it, a sanctuary of the Minoan era was revealed, constituted of two contiguous spaces. Inside and around the sanctuary votive offerings were found (figurines and star signs). Ancient Cretes had the habit to turn on big fires in summit sanctuaries, in which they flew clay votive offerings – something like today’s vows.
