Monument in Keratidi area of Damasta
Just before Damasta village, there is a marked road on the left which leads to Keratidi. On a height on the east of Damasta there is the monument and the graves of those Damastians who were executed by the Germans. At this point, which is now enclosed and wooded with cypresses, is where the execution took place. 30 cypresses were planted for each lad the Germans executed. The sabotage of Damasta was organized and performed by a group of Anogians guerrillas in which six Russians soldiers participated. Head and inspirer of the operation was the ambitious English captain Bill Moss, who had taken part in the kidnapping of Craipe. Every morning, at around 8-9 o’ clock, a van with the mail passed by Damasta, heading from Heraklion to Chania, escorted by 30 armed German soldiers and an armoured vehicle with a pompom. The block was set a kilometre west of Damasta. The guerrillas attacked, killed many Germans and disappeared, with only loss one dead man (from the team of the Russians) and two men injured.
The Germans considered that the residents of the village were accomplices, because they didn’t speak in order to suspend the sabotage and by way of retaliation, on 21st August 1944, chose the 30 most “effective” men of the village and executed them in Keratidi. Damasta was evacuated and pulled down.
